Espaço EscutArte
Psychology and the visual arts at one address in Itapira, Brazil.
Espaço EscutArte is a space for personal development that brings together, at one address in Itapira, Brazil, two practices that speak to each other: psychology and the visual arts. The idea is to widen the ways of sharpening one's abilities and broadening a sense of wellbeing, through practices drawn from the science of psychology and from making art.
The joy of discovery is certainly the liveliest that the mind of man can ever feel.
— Claude Bernard
Two practices, one address
On one side, the therapy office, where I see clients for individual therapy, couples therapy, career guidance and educational psychology. On the other, the art studio, run by visual artist Marcele Campanini.
The two are independent — coming for one does not require the other — but sharing a space makes a difference: one kind of work often leads to the other, and several of the events, workshops and projects EscutArte has held over the years grew out of exactly that meeting between listening and making.
The art studio
The studio is where Marcele Campanini develops her own work in the visual arts, researching and practising techniques such as drawing, printmaking, photography, painting and sculpture. It is also a space for teaching, research, production and experimentation, open to people of all ages who want to develop their artistic skills and creative potential.
There, art and experimentation run through the whole process of making: you learn to draw, print images, paint and model through creative practice and study, both practical and theoretical, with techniques in their conventional and unconventional forms. Materials range from graphite pencils and watercolour to pigments made from plants and discarded objects — plastics, packaging, leather, fabric. Guidance, whether one-to-one or in a group, is tailored to each student's interests and own poetics.
Creation Studio I — introductory, ages 6 and up
Children meet drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and printmaking, and can try them out with materials that range from the traditional to the unexpected — scrap and natural discards such as leaves, twigs and earth. Enjoyably, they develop cognitive and motor skills, creative potential and an understanding of the point, kinds of line, texture, form, figuration and abstraction, space, colour, light and shade, planes and volume, along with themes such as Art and the Environment.
Creation Studio II — tailored
Classes aimed at going deeper into one theme or technique: drawing, printmaking, sculpture, painting, or the basics of photography. Someone who wants to learn to build images of landscape or the human figure, for instance, moves between drawing and painting and may cross into photography within the same theme. The whole process is followed with attention to the discoveries and the mistakes that come up along the way — valuable sources of learning — and there is an invitation to step outside the comfort zone, which matters a great deal for creative growth.
Printmaking workshops — short courses
Printmaking means cutting images into surfaces such as wood, linoleum and stone, by incision, acid or pressure, and then printing them onto paper or fabric with various inks. The workshops teach woodcut, linocut and monotype (using a glass plate), among others, in both conventional and unconventional forms, with alternative materials and methods. They run for set periods, with limited places.
How to visit
The space is at Rua Carlos Raffi Marangão, 126, in Itapira, São Paulo — the same address as the therapy office. For anything about therapy, use my contact details.
